Saipan and Tinian

February 18, 2025

Saipan and Tinian

These two islands, part of the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, were the staging ground for some of the most devastating battles of World War II.  The CNMI Museum is home to Saipan’s historical artifacts as well as some of the “treasure” recovered from the 17th century wreckage of the Spanish galleon, Concepcion.  Tinian is home to North Field, a massive network of landing fields and roads that once comprised the largest military airbase, and busiest airport, in the world.

Topics of special interest include WWII history.
